No, they didn’t buy the rights to the Zenith. They originally bought the Zeniths calibre 400 movements, then modified them into a Rolex 4030 calibre. Pretty much the same way many other brands buy ETA & then modify them into their own movements (example, the Breitling calibres being based off an ETA base movement). Difference is Rolex modified the Zenith HEAVILY, we’re not talking about just a few decorations here & there & a few blued screws. Almost 1/2 the movement was replaced / modified. Then in Basel 2000 Rolex introduced a the new in-house developed chronograph movement for the Daytona, the 4130, which you find in all the Daytona’s since then.
On a side note, I believe this was also the year the Daytona lost the old ’sub style’ clasp & got the new & current Daytona clasp.
